Are these young men and women's experiences the exception or the rule?
2 out of 5 sexually active teenage girls get pregnant.
- EVERY DAY in the U.S. 3,000 teenage girls get pregnant.
- Half of all teens that get pregnant have just started having sex.
- 1 out of 3 babies born today has unmarried parents.
What about the fathers of these children?
- About half of these fathers quit school to work because they have to help support their children. Eight out of ten of these fathers stop seeing their child's mother and fewer than 1 in 10 marry their child's mother. Even if the fathers don't want to help financially, the court orders them to. Many have to work two jobs because they don't have the education and skills needed to earn very much money. Emotionally, a father's love and attention mean more than money. Millions of children in the U.S. rarely, if ever, see their father.
How are these children affected?
- Three out of four of these children live in poverty.
- The baby's health risks are greatly increased.
- These babies are more likely to be born with physical and mental problems.
- These children are more likely to commit a crime or become a teen parent themselves.
- Every year, half a million babies of teenagers die by abortion. This is more than 4,000 every day! Adoption would be a better option.
How are teenage mothers affected?
- They loose their virginity, their self-respect and usually their boyfriend - because the average teenage couple that gets sexually involved breaks up within three weeks.
- One father comments: "I didn't love her, I didn't even know what love was. It's a word I use."
- Seven out of ten teen mothers quit school; therefore, their jobs are low paying and unfulfilling.
- Most teen moms give up their friends and social life to work and take care of a child.
- Guilt lowers their self-esteem.
